Postpartum Depression

"baby blues" is considered a normal part of adjustment to motherhood. This is caused by fluctuating hormonal changes after birth and is characterized by crying, exhaustion, mood swings and anxiety. Up to 85% of new mothers experience baby blues. However, if symptoms do not disappear within two to three weeks or in extreme cases, if you have suicidal thoughts or an inability to care for your baby then you might be suffering from the disease known as postnatal or postpartum depression.
causes
It is believed that hormonal changes that accompany pregnancy and delivery trigger PPD. After childbirth women experience a drop in estrogen and progesterone hormones. Thyroid levels may also fall, leading to fatigue and depression. Changes in blood pressure, immune function and metabolism all play a role in the new mama mental health. It is argued that women have a higher development imbalances sensitivty the Postpartum Depression.
Signs and symptoms of
* Negative feelings toward the baby
* Lack of interest in your baby
* Lack of concern for their well-being
* Concerns about hurting the baby
* Lack of energy / motivation
* Loss of pleasure
* Changes in appetite
* Sleeping more or less than usual
* Feeling of worthlessness or guilt
contributing factors
Women with a previous history of severe PMS or premenstral dysphoric disorder, or past depression, or PPD in a previous pregnancy or if the pregnancy was unplanned were at greater risk of developing Postpartum Depression.
a stressful event such as a difficult delivery or disease during pregnancy also increases the odds of the disorder.
TREATMENT
an individual or group therapy in the form of psychotherapy can be very useful and has advantages over medications for breastfeeding moms because of the risk of drug-to-child transmission through breast milk. Estrogen replacement therapy can help and is often used in combination with anti-depressant medication. In severe cases, anti-depression medication May be feasible, but requires close monitoring by doctors and should be accompanied by therapy.
